Frances Michaels - Seed Saving
Permaculturalist and co-owner of Green Harvest, Frances Michaels has dedicated the past 20 years to creating a regional seed bank for the Sunshine Coast and SEQ.
A passion for permaculture, a mission to, "make it easier for people to grow food at home", and a profound respect for the generations of farmers and gardeners who have passed down the time-tested heirloom seeds, have kept Frances dedicated and successful in her work. Frances believes that, "Heirlooms are our inheritance, owned by the peoples of the world", and making that inheritance available to all of us on the Sunshine Coast is her goal.
Frances reminds us that we are lucky enough have heirlooms that have adapted to our local conditions, hardier and more viable in our region. Planting varieties that have grown successfully in our area for generations just makes more sense.
Especially in times of uncertainty and unease, we can do our part by saving our own seed, and by supporting companies such as Green Harvest to better the food security of South East Queensland.
Frances and the team at Green Harvest are doing just that, so if you don't have the time join your local Permaculture seed saving groups then take a look here and support a company that is bettering our food security, not depleting it with hybrids that are bred to be infertile and not give seed.
Thank you Frances and Green Harvest, for sharing your passion and your wisdom to inspire us to do our part, to grow our own food, to carry on the beautifully successful tradition of saving and planting heirloom seed, and for making the future of food in our area secure for generations to come.
