Mt Alma is a 364-hectare family farm located in the warm tropical growing region of North Queensland.
The property was purchased by Gary’s grandfather in 1927 and originally used for cattle and free-range pigs, grown the traditional way without synthetic chemicals.

In 1967, the farm expanded by another 66 hectares and introduced sugar cane, bringing with it the fertilisers and chemical inputs that were common at the time.

Everything changed in 2011 when Gary and Angela took over full time. They made the decision to convert the farm back to organic, returning to the natural growing methods Gary’s grandfather once practised.
Last year, Mt Alma became a fully certified organic farm, and their mangos have quickly become some of the most sought after in Queensland.

Gary says the hardest part wasn’t changing their farming methods — they were already farming organically — but simply starting the paperwork. Once that step was taken, the transition unfolded naturally.
